Something different: #twonights challenge

Couple week’s ago I read about this challenge from wilderness pro Korpijaakko’s blog, and decided to participate. The challenge is pretty simple, just spend two nights out every month. Night out means sleeping outside, under the stars, in a tent or open log cabin. Sleeping in your backyard doesn’t count 🙂

I’m going to report my nights every month in this blog with pictures stories, and this is also my first post in English, so there could be some language related mistakes.

17-18.1.2015

First night out in January  was spent on Avotunturit training. We made a short ski at lake Vesijärvi’s ice and made a camp on ice, it was my first night out in a tent on winter after year ’99 when I was in the army, and also first night ever on ice 🙂

Not too much snow on the ice. We used nails & hammer to mount the tents.

Second night out was spent was spent on a near by open log cabin. It was a cold night and I thought it was cold enough (-22°C) to test my gear on a microadventure. So after 21pm I headed to the woods with my packback and Altai Hok ski’s, Camping place was about 4,5km’s from my home, but I decided to ski over few hills, because weather was so nice, so I spent over hour skiing.

At the camp. Log cabin is pretty new, it was build on last autumn and it is mostly used by skiers because ski trail goes by. I think I could be first sleeper there :)

I made a fire and heated up some water before sleeping. This trip was mostly made to test my new sleeping bag and it was worth every penny, but my mattresses were not heavy enough to keep the cold from under, so I need to get new ones.

Slept pretty good and woke up 7 am to my alarm clock, light’s on a ski trail were turned on when I packed my gear the first skiers passed by. Because of a limited time and my hands were freezing, I decided to eat breakfast at home, so I ate few nuts and raisins and headed home before work.

30-31.1.2015

As the winter show’s it’s best and there’s lots of snow everywhere, so what else can you do on a Friday night than go back country skiing 🙂

I drove out about 20 km’s from Jyväskylä and found a parking spot not too near (or far) away from a place where would be open log cabin and firewood (Nyrölän laavusaari). I had a plan about the route and decided to check some nice hills, but soon I realized that terrain was really slow. Steep hills, lots of powder snow and thick woods, and I was advancing only under 3 km’s per hour, so at some point I decided to skip some hills and go straight to the target. It took nearly 2 hours in 5.8 km’s.

At the morning I followed first my tracks about 2 km’s and then took another route to my car, there was some nice swamp areas and also some hills to climb & ski down. This time route was 4.9 km’s and took only 1 hour 20 minutes.
